Optimize Biz

Business Consulting that begins with a question, not a pitch

Most firms hire consultants too early or for the wrong reasons. We built a diagnostic quiz so you can check whether structured consulting will actually move the needle for your business before either of us spends a penny.

Why most consulting engagements disappoint

A 2023 survey by the Management Consultancies Association found that 41% of UK mid-market firms rated their last consulting project as "partially useful at best." The pattern is almost always the same: a firm feels pressure, buys a large engagement, receives a slide deck, and then struggles to act on it.

We work differently. Every engagement at Optimize Biz Consulting starts with a structured readiness assessment. If the diagnostic shows that your team already has the internal capability to solve the problem, we say so. We would rather lose a fee than deliver a report that gathers dust.

"They told us we didn't need them yet and pointed us to two internal fixes first. Six months later we came back for the real engagement, and it worked." — Operations director, Edinburgh logistics firm

That approach filters out mismatches early. The engagements we do take on tend to finish on time, with implementation rates above 80% across the last three years.

Fit-check quiz

Answer five questions. At the end you will receive a readiness score and a recommendation on whether consulting is the right next step for your business right now.

1. How would you describe your current growth constraint?

2. Does your leadership team have time to participate in a 6-week working process?

3. What is your annual revenue range?

4. Have you worked with an external consultant before?

5. Do you have a budget allocated for consulting and implementation?

Decision board: what we work on and what we do not

Operational bottleneck analysis
We map your production or service delivery chain, identify the single tightest constraint, and design a fix with your team. Typical duration: 4 weeks.
Pricing and margin architecture
Many mid-market firms under-price by 12–18%. We rebuild your pricing logic from cost data, competitor positioning, and customer willingness-to-pay research.
Leadership alignment sessions
When co-founders or board members disagree on direction, we facilitate structured decision sessions. Two half-day workshops, clear written outputs.
Market entry feasibility
Considering a new geography or vertical? We run a 3-week desk-and-field study and deliver a go/no-go recommendation with financial projections.
IT strategy or software selection
Not our area. We refer to specialist technology consultancies and stay out of tool decisions.
Recruitment or HR policy
Also outside our scope. We can recommend trusted HR advisors in Scotland if needed.

"The pricing review alone added £340k in annual margin. We had been leaving money on the table for years without realising it."

— Managing director, Aberdeen manufacturing firm

"They ran two workshops with our board and we left with a written growth plan that everyone actually agreed on. First time in three years."

— Chair, Glasgow professional services partnership

"Honest from the start. Told us our real problem was internal communication, not strategy. Saved us from a £50k engagement we did not need."

— Finance director, Dundee food distributor

Engagement pathway

Every project follows this sequence. There are no shortcuts, because skipping steps is how consulting engagements fail.

Readiness call (free, 30 minutes)

We talk through your situation and decide together whether a formal engagement makes sense. About half of these calls end with a referral elsewhere or a suggestion to wait.

Diagnostic sprint (1 week)

If we proceed, we spend a week inside your data: financials, process maps, team interviews. You receive a written diagnostic report with a prioritised list of constraints.

Working sessions (3–5 weeks)

We co-design solutions with your leadership team in weekly half-day sessions. Nothing is handed over as a slide deck. Every output is a working document your team owns.

Implementation support (optional, 4–8 weeks)

If you want us to stay through execution, we embed part-time with your operations team. We track progress against the diagnostic baseline and adjust as needed.

90-day review

Three months after the engagement ends, we run a free review session to measure what stuck and what drifted. This keeps implementation rates high.

Common questions

A diagnostic sprint runs between £3,500 and £6,000 depending on company size. Full working-session engagements range from £12,000 to £35,000. We quote a fixed fee after the readiness call so there are no surprises.
Rarely. Our frameworks are designed for businesses with at least two years of trading history and enough data to diagnose properly. Pre-revenue startups usually need mentoring or accelerator programmes rather than consulting.
The readiness call and 90-day review are always remote. Diagnostic sprints and working sessions are on-site for at least the first engagement. After that, hybrid arrangements work well for repeat clients.
We have deep experience in manufacturing, professional services, food and drink distribution, and logistics. The operational frameworks we use transfer well across sectors, so we occasionally take on clients in other industries if the fit-check scores well.
You still receive the full diagnostic report. We include a prioritised action list your internal team can follow without us. About one in five diagnostics ends this way, and we consider that a good outcome.
